Friends, Romans, Community, by Jim Hart

I just finished reading the book of Romans this week. Romans continues to be one of my favorite books in Scripture. Don’t you find that every time you re-visit portions of the Bible that you’re familiar with something new always jumps out at you?

This time it was the very last chapter that got my attention. As Paul wraps up his letter to the Believers in Rome he lists over thirty people by name, giving them special recognition. He called them, sisters, co-workers, dear friends, good men, leaders, those who risked their lives for him, and fellow Jews.

He told the readers to greet Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia. That little tidbit alone amazed me. We know the name of the person that we could call “Christian Zero” in the Roman Province of Asia. What a heritage. Paul seems so grateful for their presence and activity in his life. He recognizes the great need for deep relationships and co-workers in his life.

While looking through the names of people that Paul recognized and honored, I started to think of people in my own life that I consider co-workers in the Gospel. And then I began to consider those people in the publishing world that I would consider to be co-workers.

Chad Allen wrote in his recent blog “I’ve noticed that my friendships seem to head in one trajectory or another too. Not exclusively, of course, but primarily I have friends who support my spiritual pursuits, and I have other friends who support my entrepreneurial pursuits. And I value both equally.”
There are other words that have been tossed around a lot that could mean the same as co-worker. Words such as tribe and community. Both describe a group of people that one could share something in common with: a goal, a belief system, an affection. The ones that we do life with. The ones that we couldn’t get along without.

It’s good to follow Paul’s example to appreciate and honor our own tribes and community. Who makes up your list? Critique partners, beta readers, editors, agents, fellow bloggers and the readers who comment on your blog? People who have given their time and resources toward your work as a writer and author? Some of them may live in another part of the country, or the world, as was Paul’s experience. He had co-workers all over the map. Today, thanks to the internet, we can say the same thing.

But let me close with this. As I was meditating on all of this, and considering those people that make up my own tribe and community – my co-workers - I began to wonder how many people would put me on their own list? And that’s really my challenge for us. Let’s make someone’s list.

Let Us Pray by Diana L. Flegal

As an agent, I constantly encourage my clients to maintain an online presence and develop genuine community through social media.

I am online as well, with Facebook being my primary social networking avenue.

Through years of attending writers conferences and gathering friends, I have come to have genuine affection for many people and follow their lives and those of their families.

Recently many of my 'friends' have requested prayer for some very serious things. I thought I would share a few of their requests here with their permission so we might lift them up together.

Sarah Burns Hampshire shared:  Min (sonny-boy, age 20 physically but developmental about age 8-10) has terminal brain cancer. a mass has infiltrated both hemispheres of the brain and spidered as well. The tumor is causing multiple problems already. He also has a benign tumor causing havoc on his equilibrium, and he's always nauseous ...or worse. This tumor, although small, is in an inoperable place. This is all I will share right now, but know we are in need of prayer for numerous concerns involved with this. The first 2 days we were in total shock and held such sadness, but on the third day, we truly felt God's peace lift us.

Sarah asked: Will you also pray that Min's foster mother is located? She raised him for 3 years, and we kept in touch until about 6 years ago. Then somehow we lost each other with moves, etc. My husband called the adoption agency to tell them about Min, and the director "happened" to be going to South Korea in 2 weeks. She said she'd take anything Min wanted to send, and the agency overseas is searching for his foster mother now. The director said she'd hand-deliver Min's gifts to her. So Min went shopping for special gifts, we wrote her letters, and they went in the mail today.

note: They are in the process of building Min a man cave complete with stalactites and mites. A precious family bravely facing a tough heartbreaking time.

Please pray for Sandy Ardoin and family. Her brother passed away of a heart attack. 50 years old - a husband and father of four kids from 11-14.

One gal asked: Please pray my relationship with my daughter (and her relationship with God) will be restored.

Cindy Valenti Scinto had a heart transplant a few years back and recently had a biopsy. Please pray as she is dealing with depression and many physical issues.

Another woman asked for prayer for her back.

And another's son ran into a window and has a concussion. He is on restricted activity and out of school. Prayers are appreciated. Thanks to all who have been praying for him!

Cynthia Lott Vogel is an author friend I met in Philadelphia. My son had just been diagnosed with Bipolar Illness. Cynthia had written a book about her journey through Mental Illness. She ministered to me at a crisis time.  Her blog, Treasures in Darkness offers support to many suffering with Mental Illness and depression.

Cynthia's prayer is: that you will be able to look beyond this broken, sinful woman, and see her incredible God...and that you would consider making Him your God as well.

My son Curt, is currently in the hospital. He made it three years without a hospitalization and had been doing so well. Please pray that he recovers from this drug induced mania and accompanying delusions and wisdom for the Dr's, to administer the correct meds.

How can we pray for you or your loved ones? Feel free to ask.

Interview with Linda Rondeau- Creator of Pentalk- an online community of writers

With authors seeking more ways to network and share information, diverse creative sites pop up. I would like to share one that is relatively new, created by author Linda Rondeau titled, Pentalk.

Linda , Thank you for being with us today. Can you share with our readers today just what Pentalk is and where you came up with the idea for it.

I noticed that there are myriad writing groups for various genres, beliefs, and age groups. The Lord seemed to ask me if I would start a writing group that would encompass all genres, ages, and belief systems, an arena where Christians could exemplify Christ as they worked together with other writers who may not be believers.

How has it's Growth been and the response on FB to it.

From an initial small group page, Pentalk now consists of a Facebook Community Page of over 200 members, a Facebook networking page of 121, a Yahoo group page for non-Facebook members and a blog, currently with 84 followers, some through Google and others through Facebook. We have a steering committee of four individuals in addition to myself. Carol McClain and Dale Langlois manage the author interviews, Carol Moncado is the editor-in-chief for the blog. Dan Waltz manages our book cover album in addition to art consultation.

Have you had to make any changes to it since you first began?

The group evolved through the needs of its members. Some wanted more than simply a "chat" forum. The community page offers a more professional setting and can be joined by simply "liking" the page. We soon learned that members wanted information and education so we formed the blog. We also wanted to have a communication avenue for non-facebook users. Pentalk is for and about writing by writers. We are committed to helping one another as writers. This includes sharing our blogs, giving encouragement, and posting our celebrations.
