I had to leave the conference before Angela presented that advice, so this post restores a bit of what I missed.

In my own case, my manuscripts used to suffer from cancer of the semicolon. Fortunately, though, a friend pointed this out, and now I perform surgery to remove most of those. Right now, I'm focusing on various unneeded words and prepositional phrases. It's a bit like cutting out literary cellulite. I hope the final product will be a bit slimmer, leaner, and more attractive to readers' eyes.Rick Barryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17795635112065282277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2443765296489868573.post-50125229811361485252011-11-08T13:23:25.660-05:002011-11-08T13:23:25.660-05:00This is a great idea, but there's an easier wa...This is a great idea, but there's an easier way to do it: search for your pet word and check that box that says "Highlight all instances." That way you don't have to change the keepers back to lowercase.

My overused words include "really," "just," and "moment," plus others specific to each manuscript.Katherine Hydehttp://kbhyde.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2443765296489868573.post-26540664328264395442011-11-08T12:19:11.027-05:002011-11-08T12:19:11.027-05:00Great suggestion about using the find and replace!...Great suggestion about using the find and replace! I find that there are words I use too often (find and often and for example, for example), but as I read this I couldn't help but be reminded of the opening of A Tale of Two Cities. I think we don't know when to use 'be' verbs. Perhaps it is out of fear. For all the criticism they receive, they show up as the most powerful verbs in some of the most memorable writing imaginable. "Be" is a powerful word.
